The level 5 team gymnastics team from Auburn Gymnastics Center began their season on Saturday.

AUBURN-Two girls from Auburn Gymnastics Center took high honors at the 2011 National Association of Women’s Gymnastic Judges Cup in Rancho Cordova, Calif. on Saturday, Aug. 20 opening their season in grand style.
Level 4, Hannah Caminiti, placed first on vault, floor and second in all-around while, level 5, Allyson Osborn, placed first on bars, second on all around, fourth on vault and floor.
“What a way to start the season,” said coach, Jennifer Christenson. “This is a great team and we are excited. I could barely sleep the night before.”
The two girls are part of a 16-person gymnastics team training locally at Auburn Gymnastics Center and competing against other teams across California during the next five months as their season progresses.
The Saturday competition was attended by 240 girls from 25 teams kicking off the gymnastics season with a meet hosted by judges from Northern California and setting the bar for the season for most clubs.
More than 1,700 gymnasts from throughout the United States competed during the weekend as the sport has seen a surge in participants in recent months.
“Gymnastics is defiantly on the rise again and this meet was the place to see all the competition for the season,” said Natalie Otis owner of Auburn Gymnastics Center. “With so many competitors we were striving to get our girls top ten placements for their level and age division. At the next meet we are setting our sights on top 5.”
Level 5 team member Emily Esteban wasn’t far from the leader, she took 4th on bars (8.7) and 5th on floor (8.525), Kristen Kopp took 6th all-around earning top ten on all events, Aneesa Perez took top ten on every event while Emily Benson placed in the top 10 on bars.
On the level 4 squad, Breanna Phillips took 7th floor, Annah Sutherland placed 10th on vault, McKenzie Dunigan placed 5th on vault, 8th on bars, 7th floor and 10th all-around, Delilah Fulton placed 6th on bars, 4th on beam, 10th on floor and 6th in the all-around, Kacy Burns took top 8th on vault and Hannah Fulton placed 8th on vault.
The teams have three more weeks of practice before their next competition - the coaches said they plan on working on polishing up the routines and skills during the two-days a week the girls practice.
“Nearly all of these gymnasts are competing at a new level and for more than half of the kids this was their first competition - ever,” Otis said. “Pretty great, for the first time out but we always are striving to be better as the season moves on.”
