Gymnasts from Auburn Gymnastics Center competed in a San Diego meet last weekend at the Town and Country Resort hosted by Poway Gymnastics.
Nine hundred and seventy-seven female gymnasts from dozens of gymnastics clubs both in California and out competed against other gymnasts at their level and age and in the end it was a victory to walk away in the top ten.
“The competition was tough but we like our gymnasts to be exposed to every level of gymnastics. At these levels it is important to put yourself up against the best and see how you fair,” said coach and owner of Auburn Gymnastics Center, Natalie Otis. “When we take our kids to these huge events it is as much about teaching them how to hold together and work through nerves and stress as it is to win.”
Auburn Gymnastics Center’s top competitor Kellie Oesterling held her own on Sunday in the level 8 competition placing in the top ten out of 20 on every event except the balance beam.
Her highest score of the day come on floor with a 9.125, however, her highest placement of the day came on vault where she medaled with an 8.575 by competing both a handspring and a flipping vault.
Level 7 competitor Haley Christenson also came in top 10 in four out of five placement areas which are vault, bars, beam, floor and all-around. She took fifth place on floor with a 9.0.
“Outside of winning state as a level 5 gymnast this is was the most stressful meet situation Haley has ever been in. This season she came off an injury to her knee that took two years to heal completely only to compete as a level 7 for the first time - once she got past the nerves she really shined,” Otis said. “Floor has always been a standout event for her and she has a beautifully choreographed routine by our floor coach that showcases her skills.”
The gymnasts will take two weeks to train and make corrections to their routines before their next competition in Rancho Cordova at Technique Gymnastics.
